In March 2010 we moved here and they installed a new carpet and padding.
In July 2011 i tried to replace the padding under the carpet. It was stinking like naphtha, glue and something else. Back then i didn't know what something else was. I bought a new padding but it was smelling again like naphtha (which back then i didn't know what it was.) even worse that the one in place and i just returned it. Complicated but quite simple. The sweet smell comes from the organic glue the fiberboard is made of besides wood fiber. Probably residue from slaughterhouses. Blood and collagen. It turned into a dust and entered the padding on the low side. The red dots are where i injected deodorant a about a month ago and it dissolved the dust. Deodorant was made of water, propylene glycol and/or enzymes. Almost transparent, nothing red in it. I also used pounds of baking soda. But that one didn't go beyond the carpet.
For about 200 dollars in 2011 i bought self adhesive liners and sealed the floor. I did a good job since it's still there after two years and still intact. Nothing comes now in or out of the fiberboard. However, it was one year to late. It entered the padding and is still there. (In order to seal it you have to sweep the floor really, really good for dust so the liner would stick there. I have it on the hard floor in the kitchen area and it stays there for more than a year and is better then other sealants).
I would have benefited if i replaced the padding but what was bothering me, the naphtha smell was still there as they gave me a similar padding with extra naphtha. Again, i thought the fiberboard was made with formaldehyde.
Back then i forgot (i was too sick to the stomach) to take pictures of it and to this day it was my fantasy now came true to take pictures and here they are.
If anybody is curious about the smell, there's only one thing i would tell him/her. Be my guest.

The last few weeks it's been like hell in here. Down stairs neighbor keeps forgetting the fan on. Because of the vibration some sweet and irritant stuff it's coming from within the bathroom wall, through cracks.
And since this was not enough, a couple of days ago a tree trimming company came and vibrated the whole place for a day. Some wood dust came. I think the wood dust drys the mineral oil i put in the attic to bind the mineral wool. NW Arbor Tech or Arbor Masters or something like this. They also cut some branches of the trees so i get a better view of the sky.
Anyways, the day after they came, in the morning was stinking in here like polypropylene glyicol, the stuff the deodorant i poured in the carpet was made of. So i called the carpet cleaners, for the first time in three years.
They came but the smell did not go out. Today i tried to clean it again manually by pouring water and picking it with a towel. A very inefficient and tiresome job. Especially since i feel so weird after the NW tree guys came in.
The carpet cleaners from Stanley Steamer wanted to add some stuff for protecting the carpet, but i told them i would give it some thought.
Today i remembered. Last time after i poured the deodorant, i added some fish enzymes because i was desperate about the ammonia smell that might have some fish protecting protein, that might have helped with protecting the carpet. About a week after that everything was slippery in here.
Then i realized. If the stuff coming from walls it's sulfur dioxide from dissociating of calcium sulfate the drywall is made of and the fiberboard is made of animal byproducts, including blood, one can only imagine what chemical reactions can occur.
Woke at 5 with palpitations. Two fans blowing near me in the living. At 9:42 still smell like polypropylene glycol. Carpet a bit wet in the area where i work yesterday that is about 40 feet. Moved in the bedroom. For about half hour just loud hissing of showers and stomping from downstairs. No fan. Fell asleep and woke up more rested than usual. But with palpitation. The way the stompings where, synchronized with my thought can be explained in two ways. Shinshin shingan or robots.
