Pulitzer Prize-Winning, With Typo

In this 2001 Pulitzer winning article from the Oregonian by Julia Sullivan-Springhetti, published December 2000, there is a typo, one occurrence only, yeras instead of years.

There used to be a direct link at the Pulitzer site to this article but they made it impossible to link to it. Down in this page you can search for this title and click on it.

"Congressional acts move the INS, sometimes: Pressure on the agency from elected officials often helps immigrant families through the system, but it doesn't ensure success"

http://www.pulitzer.org/winners/6932

Needless to say. John Pulitzer was Hungarian and Pulitzer prize is worth 10000 dollars and is given to many journalists every year.

Lodge Climbing, 1979

Summer 1979. End of High School. During vacation before college (actually before the mandatory nine month military stage before college) i was working at the local furniture factory across the street from where i was living in Câmpulung, Suceava. 7 November St, now they changed it to Calea Transilvaniei, don't know why.

I was spending all my evenings at the Mancaş family, half mile down the street. Mother and three daughters. Mrs.Mancaş (born Gătej) was from Câmpulung and owned that piece of property with a cottage, across the street from where Liviu Strugariu, my ex grade school class mate lived. In fact, he introduced me to them. Daughters, Elena, Tatiana and Gabi. Tatiana, the cutest, "had to give up ballet because of a heart murmur". Tatiana and Elena "just got admitted to college", as myself.
(Years later Gabi told me Tatiana became a physics teacher and married in Piatra Neamţ).

One day my three Tehnoton HS ex class mates, Mareş Mirel of Buhuşi, now Montreal, Canada, Valentin Gheorghiţă of Focşani, Romania, Gabriel Ringhiliescu of Iaşi, Ştefăneşti - Botoşani, France, came with Gabi's brand new car, (Dacia) for a trip to Ardeal. My father didn't want me to leave the job so they went alone. In a couple of weeks they came back and we went on a Saturday on a trip to Rarău, a blessed place on the face of the Earth. (No i don't believe anymore he is the guy on the right).

Mareş Mirel, left, Valentin Gheorghiţă, right, Gabi Ringhilescu, next to him. Click to enlarge.

I went to Mancaş sisters which i visited all summer and they agreed to come with us. We bought some food and a bottle of 1 litre of brandy. Mirel, V.Gheorghiţă and myself went by foot, some 9 miles, and the rest with Gabi in the car.

We raised a tent and rain came. We used the pump from the mat to blow in a fire. Made a trip around the lodge. Weather and angle of view of the lodge from where we had the tent was similar to this one.

Night came. The six of them slept in the tent. There was not enough room in the tent and i was left to sleep in the parked car but couldn't sleep and played with car's radio's dial on the short waves. I think i drank, alone, most of the brandy. I caught some music at Free Europe. I remember they were playing ABBA's song Give me Give me Give Me a Man at the Midnight. (Now i know that song was officially released months later, don't know). And i was singing along replacing the word man with girl. And then something really weird happened. I saw through the windshield a guy coming down the lodge from the roof using a climbing rope. Dressed in a completely black suite, tight on the body, like for divers. He went inside on a window.

I was too drunk to think. I thought maybe he was playing a prank to somebody. I don't know.

The next day i think i told them the story but nobody paid attention. We went back to Câmpulung the same way we came. Sun came up. Beautiful day. I had a hangover. Monday went back to work.

From time to time i remember the episode. Don't know what to think anymore. Could it have been...a ninja?

Romanian - Sanskrit Comparison

Cristian Ioanide - In Memoriam

"In principle, every difference between two related languages should be explicable to a high degree of plausibility and systematic changes, for example in phonological or morphological systems are expected to be highly regular (i.e. consistent). In practice, the comparison may be more restricted, e.g. just to the lexicon."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparative_linguistics

The generally accepted Indo-European theory in linguistics states that all languages in Europe and India have a common ancestor, the hypothetical PIE or Proto-Indo-European language.

However there are major disagreements regarding this hypothetical language and the reconstruction attempts so far lay in the domain of bizarre. No serious academic attention had been directed into reconstructing this hypothetical language. In dictionaries so far (like the Romanian Explicative Dictionary or DEX) though there are many basic words deemed as of unknown origin, generally attributed by some authors, mostly biased nationalist, to the Dacian language or the language we all assume it was spoken in Dacia before Romans arrived, there is not on single etymology given as PIE. In French i haven't seen a single word given of unknown etymology or as PIE but in both languages i found words that certainly remind me of Sanskrit. The English lexis may be also as rich as Romanian in Sanskrit roots. Interestingly enough, the words are distributed in different languages, as if Sanskrit divided or distributed separate chunks or lists of words to different inheriting languages though many are overlapping, like from English and Romanian.

It is almost impossible to believe that Romans did not keep or no archives are found regarding the different aspects of life in Dacia during their direct administration period which lasted some 165 years including basic lexis or pieces of written language. No written records are to be found in any archive about the Dacian language (with some dubious exceptions).

The subject of such records being hidden in archives for political reasons or even destroyed is a completely different story i won't start to dig in right now.

So personally following an intuition triggered by an anecdotal information i found in an article i read in early 90s which stated that a numbered a Romanian basic words are matching with perfectly similar Sanskrit ones like apa-apa (water), gand-gandiva (thought) etc. i tried to look in current online dictionaries like spokensankrit.org (formerly .de) just to verify. To my surprise they all seemed to have a Sanskrit corespondent, almost identical, down to pronunciation.

So i took the list of Romanian words of unknown origin (Wikipedia version) and started to look in that dictionary for more matches and found an abundance of words of undoubtful (to me) Sanskrit origin.

I assume the online dictionary mentioned above that is based on the widely recognized Monier Williams Sanskrit dictionary which is also available online from the University of Koln is still not complete though it numbers over half million entries. There are in there words that have obviously too many entered meanings [by volunteering contributors] of which some being even opposite, many probably coming from only one occurrence in an isolated text maybe used as metaphors. No one can tell. But i was pretty conservative in building this list and picked correspondences only from the roughly first 10-20% of meanings confirmed by the most redundancies (or close meanings) in the rest of the entered meanings staying mainly in the Monier Wiliams safe area. Interestingly, there are words, like gata that have the same corresponding many meanings both in Romanian and Sanskrit and this is obvious only for those who know Romanian as i cannot add more entries for words with different meaning in Romania being beyond the current purpose of this modest work.

Never finished checking that list because while browsing the dictionaries i started to find more and more words that where not on that list having a greater resemblance with Sanskrit words than with Latin or Old Slavonic (the precursor of all modern Slavic languages) of which etymologies are officially given in Romanian dictionaries and i started to build a list on a spreadsheet with all the words i could find that seemed to me closer to Sanskrit than Latin and Slavonic which are the officially accepted by academics main ancestors of Romanian language, besides the still largely unknown Dacian language. All words from the basic or day to day usage Romanian language lexis.

I also added verbs that seem similar in writting, pronunciation and meaning with nouns and adjectives in Romanian. https://sanskritstudio.wordpress.com/2013/03/05/the-sanskrit-past-passive-participle/. I am not a linguist but i assume in a few thousands years of separation some past participles may have morphed into adjectives and even nouns. Same thing happened in the dictionary itslef, noun from Sanskrit are translated like verbs in English.

Also while browsing this online dictionary i had the surprise to also come across many English words that seem to have a direct corespondent in Sanskrit of which some i added in a smaller list that is also included in this blog post.

My conclusion so far is there are many Sanskrit words in Romanian, maybe as many as 50% of the lexis of Romanian, but when they match, some of them identically as pronunciation, most of the time they do not coincide as first meaning. This indicates a strong but very old connection.

Could the reason for finding so many Romanian words of possible Sanskrit origin be the Dacian language was closed to Sanskrit which was also close to PIE. It is up to linguists in the future to follow these hypotheses. This work is by far not complete and i strongly believe what i found is intriguing enough to requires their attention. But i am also afraid many already knew about all these complex and contradictory issues, since i don't know, the first contact of modern western civilization with the eastern one, probably since German linguists Franz Bopp built the first known grammar of Sanskrit and for some obvious political reasons they chose to delay their findings until people of the world will be able to better deal with the Indo-European linguistic theory that if was to be applied would probably require extensive rewriting of dictionaries and why not, maybe history itself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Bopp

When i first started to study the lexis of Sanskrit i started to ask myself how i will pronounce the words. In the end i realized the pronunciation follows pretty much Latin, as the several existing transliteration types use mainly Latin alphabet.

However there is an alternate way to figure pronunciation. Since Google Translate cannot translate Sanskrit and there is no other site on the internet that i know of that can pronounce any typed words in Devanagari script one can trick Google Translate to pronounce Sanskrit as Hindi since Hindi uses the same alphabet and almost the same pronunciation.

So i added links to every word in the list (done with Google Spreadsheets) written in Sanskrit with Devanagari script so you can click on then on the little speaker icon under the box where the word appears to hear the pronunciation. Most of those words do not even exist in Hindi.

There are also links provided for every Romanian word to Google Translate for both translation in English to eliminate any doubt and pronunciation for comparison of pronunciation with the paired Sanskrit words and also links for every Sanskrit word transliterated with Latin characters to different dictionaries where i found that word. There are more than 700 links in total.

Google Translate is not particularly good with Romanian phrases although lately it got much better. However, for individual words it is acceptable. The computer generated pronunciation in Romanian is kind of rough, compared to the one in Hindi, but good enough for the purpose.

For comparing the words i used the following on-line dictionaries and lists:

Aquarelle

by Ion Minulescu - 1920

In the city where it always rains three times in seven days
All the citizens on sideways,
Walk by two while holding hands,
In the city where it always rains three times in seven days,
Covered under old umbrellas
Sighing, bending,
Wet from raining,
All the citizens on sideways
Look like automated puppets taken out of the storefronts.

In the city where it always rains three times in seven days
You can only hear on sideways
Steps of those who walk by two,
Counting
In their mind
The falling
Of the raindrops from umbrellas,
From the gutters,
And from sky
With the power of a cry
Giver of a life that's latent,
Useless,
Monotone
And absent.

In the city where it always rains three times in seven days
An old man and an old woman -
Looking like two broken toys -
Walk on sideway hand in hand...

Ode (In Antique Metre)

by Mihai Eminescu - 1883

Never thought i could learn how to die;
Always young, covered in my mantle,
My serene dreamy eyes were searching the star
Of loneliness.

When suddenly you arose in my path
Sufferance you, painfully sweet...
To the bottom i drank the voluptuous death,
Unforgiving.

Lamentably burning alive like Nessus.
Or like Hercules poisoned by his shirt;
I can't possibly quench my fire with all
Water of the sea.

Of my own dream, consumed i am weeping,
On my own stake, i'm melting in flames...
Can i ever revive shining from it like
The Bird Phoenix?

Disappear the troubling eyes from my path,
Come again to me, sad indifference;
So i can peacefully die, myself
Give back to me!

I Do Not Crush

By Lucian Blaga - 1919

I do not crush world's corolla of wonders
And do not kill
With my mind mysteries i meet
In my own path
In flowers, eyes or lips or graves.
Let others' light
Choke all the magic of the unseen hidden
In darkness' depth
But i,
I with my light enhance world's riddle -
Exactly how with its pale rays the Moon
Does not decrease but trembling
Increases even more night's secret
The same way i enrich the dark horizon
With shivers large of holy mystery
And all misunderstandings
Turn to some even greater ones
Under my eyes -
Cause i love all
The flowers, eyes and lips and graves.

Linia escu

Antonescu nu a fost altceva decât next level (probably last before game over).

Heads Down!

As heard in early 80s. Original in Romanian, slightly modified for English.

http://www.mioritice.com/banc/14989/#ixzz24a8jStwN

Booly dies and goes to Hell. A little devil gives him a tour of Hell and shows him the rooms he could chose from.

The first room, huge boilers of tar. He passes on that one.

The second room, huge boilers of sulfuric acid. He passes that one too.

The third room, a huge bowl of shit in which the sinners where standing up to their necks and smoking.

Booly quickly picks the third room. He hops in the bowl, lights up a cigarette and in a couple of minutes another little devil comes in and says:

- Come on guys, break's over, heads down now!...

Bela

The Idiots

The author of the first article in Romanian forgot to bring to Romanians' attention one of the most important paragraphs in the original article, "None of Romania's universities are ranked among the top 500."

I wish The Economist the best of luck in deciphering the complexity of this issue. I'm sure with the today's advancements in psychology, sociology and other disciplines many of the scholars of their own major universities could explain for us many of the aspects of the phenomenon, given time and motivation. And maybe they are already doing it for private or privileged entities, for the right compensation.

But the author just tackle the issue and brings to us only the short term with possible economic effects implications leaving place for many interpretations and of course, as many other press articles do, with no suggested solutions.

We are also noticing here the irony of the question in the title quoting a president that he uses himself a very old and advanced type of twisted psychology pointing sarcastically a problem that himself helped create.

Nobody is an idiot. But people, many times do exploitable, idiotic things. Sometimes on subconscious demand.

However, there are enough people in Romania who may understand well this problem but choose not to talk or whose silence have been bought or whose voice have been covered by well targeted noise or corrupted by political forces  that make confusion, corruption, mass ignorance, some of their tools in taking over that country.

Interestingly enough, i think they also have some kind of philosophy that covers their own conscience, thinking slowly eliminating "the garbage" or those who give in to the pressure of corruption they create, or "bury themselves" in sweet ignorance, for the future good of the country, (but not necessarily the people of the current generation) ("Uneori ca să îţi salvezi poporul trebuie mai întâi să salvezi ţara") (We all so well heard that for generations... "Generaţii de sacrificiu").  And when they do not fully succeed, they threat, frame and blackmail, trying especially to show to their own that is doable.

But if somebody would ask me i would say the problem has even deeper roots. It starts simply with the interdiction of talking of certain things, during the harshest period of the communist era. People were fearing their own family members as being possible informants. Once the habit formed, in a generation or two they relaxed the repression and started using softer methods and made the country look in many aspects similar to western countries and the habit was handed down throughout generations and changed form and became part of the culture. I don't know if it's not too obvious what i will try now to say, but by not talking about certain things in time generations stopped thinking at those things and those things were so related to the exercising of the most basic of human activities or rights that it lead to an atrophy of some area of personality for entire generations.

For reasons that may be known to the authors of the original article, Romania, thanks in part to its above quoted president is more visible internationally than other ex-communist countries but i think is safe to assume the phenomenon is similar.

It is also possible that Romania was somewhat treated specially and prepared for the future within the eastern block due to its potential as being a closer resemblance with western European countries and civilizations.

Iar toate formulările de adresare se terminau cu другие друзья.

(poza are rezoluţie bună, merită un clic)

"The stable population of Romania is about 19 million persons, according the the temporary results of the census done by Institutul Naţional de Statistică (INS) (in 2011), less 2.5 million persons since the 2002 census.

Of these, 18.34 millions where in the country during census and .68 where abroad. Officially on long term there are  .91 million Romanians abroad while .3 where temporary present."

Oops.

Oops. Institutul National de Statistică did not publicized on its site the final results of the 2011 census. If we believe what Jurnalul National says, there are in Romania 18.37 million citizen and 0.658 million abroad, where do we take from 18.29 million with right to vote?

Let's say the population is equally divided on groups of ages between 0 and 70, then between 0 and 18 there are 70/18*19.3=4.75. I don't understand.

"The Minister of Interior, Ioan Rus anounced tuesday that the total number of citizens with right to vote is  18.292.514"

http://www.gandul.info/news/rus-numarul-total-al-cetatenilor-cu-drept-de-vot-este-de-18-292-514-9899590

Let's say that birth rate decreased and in fact there are not 4,75 millions between 0 and 18 but only half, that is 2.375. According to the Minister of Interior, it would mean that between the age of 0 and 18 there are 18.37 + 0.65 - 18.29 that is 19,28 - 18.29 = 0.738 million citizens between the ages of 0 and 18, that is a reduction of birth rate way too big in the last 18 years compared to the year 1994. But the population of Romania decreased in the last 18 years with 3.5 millions and if the death rate stayed about the same that would mean that birth rate only decreased with one third that would mean there are about  1.25 million Romanians between the age of 0 and 18. not 0.73.

And that is because in Romania the birth rate was about equal with death rate in the last decades.

They were 22,760,449 Romanians in Romania in 1992,  the closest number i could find in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania#Demographics It is reasonable to assume using the decrease rate calculated from that table that in 1994 they where about 22.5 millions.

But let's put this in a different way. In Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_birth_rate Romania is on position 180 of 221 with 10 births per 1000 inhabitants every year. That means 10,000 births to 1 million and 190.000 at 19 millions, thus in 18 years have been born 3.420.000 Romanian, worst case scenario (Population was more than 19 million and birth rate was bigger than 10). Without right to vote.

Still Have

Mihai Eminescu - 1883

Still have a single sigh:
In silence of the night
I beg to let me die
Near sea at the low tide;
And let my sleep be calm
And forests be nearby,
On stretched waters' balm
I'll have the clearest sky
I don’t need any flags,
Don’t want a coffin rich,
Just plait for me a rug
From the trees’ youngest branches.

And no one needs to weep
Or show the smallest grief,
Just let the autumn speak
With wet and falling leaves.
And while with noise sway
The springs among the cliffs,
The Moon will slip away
On the long tops of firs.
The cowbells pierce near sea
The colder evening wind,
My holy linden tree
Above will start to swing.

As i won’t wander off
Since then for evermore,
My memories, with love
Will snow on me galore
The Morning-Evening Stars
As then will be my friends,
Through branches of the firs
Would smile at me again.
Will moan with all the hurts
The ocean’s coarse caress...
As i will become dirt
In my last loneliness.

Hello

In 1972 when i was twelve I've been in a CISV camp in Kisdorf, near Hamburg, Germany, sent by the communist regime in Romania.

The exact location is Ulmenhof in Kisdorf, as shown below. It's probably a school now.

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4659551

Seeing that picture triggered lots of memories.

I never quite understood why me, because there were many other eligibile (children of the communist elite), like the other three kids in the Romanian delegation. I never quite understood why an organization like yours would invite children from the communist countries, since the only ones that would benefit would be the children of the above elite, with few exceptions.

Not speaking any international language, except for a few french words made it tough for us, almost traumatizing. We weren't able to communicate with the other kids. I remember quite vividly Klauss, the director of the camp asking me severeal times in French: "Pourquoi tu es toujour si seul ?". That made me feel somewhat guilty.

I also have nice memories from there, like driving a car for the first time in my life (a Renault 4 owned or rented by Olaf from Sweden) and being saved from drowning in an Olympic size swimming pool. (I was a poor swimmer at that time.)

Also dancing for the first time in the dark in a "discoteque" with the chef's daughter, Suzanna (I don't know the exact spelling) organized by a couple of local german guys that were hanging around. I think one of them was the son of a prominent local CISV member.

I remember once Klauss filmed me with a nice camera with zoom I also played with and during projection, the film jammed and I saw my image catching fire on the screen.

I am asking your help in consolidating the memories of those days with the complete list of the sites visited and a list of the staff present in the camp with their qualifications.

As I said I didn't speak any English at the time. But from singing the camp's song every morning, i memorized the words and reconstructed the lyrics later on. Please confirm that this was the camp's song lyrics.

"Here in this village you may see
Children living happily
Swedes, Finns, Turks, Romanians
British, Germans, Canadians
Philippines, Italians too
We have many things to do
How am i alike to you"

Especially the last line doesn't sound quite right.

Many appreciations for your work,

Gheorghe Ion

Dear Gheorghe,

Thank you very much for your e-mail. It is good to hear that, after so many years, you are still thinking of your CISV experience.

First of all, as regards names and addresses we are not able to give out personal details about participants. However, we recommend that your register on the CISV Friends website ( http://friends.cisv.org) and claim participation in your Village (V-1972-006), and in doing so, possibly make contact with other people who participated in your programme.

By registering on the CISV Friends website you will also receive regular links to CISV publications such as CISV News and the CISV Annual Review.

Secondly, I am afraid we do not have the specific information you are requesting as related to excursion destinations.

Thirdly, as for the lyrics you provided, these appear to have been specific to your programme. Sometimes in the different programmes the lyrics of the CISV song and other songs are adapted by the participants to fit their programme or as part of a performance for a public occasions such as Open Day.

The official lyrics of the CISV Song are these:

The CISV Song (Kathleen Milne/Bjarne Kirk)

Here in this village you may see
Children living happily
Different race and different land
Here we come to understand
One another’s point of view
Learning through the things we do
How alike am I to you

Here we live and eat and sleep
Talk and laugh and sometimes weep
Here we share our hopes and fears
Build a bridge across the years
Sow a seed and plant a tree
Beneath whose branches there may be
All the nations gathered free

That our children so may grow
In a world we did not know
Sharing all they have to give
Learning how to love and live
In our hands the future lies
Seize the moment ‘ere it flies
Stamp the present with an act
Dare to make our dream a fact

Cheers,
Bebbe

03/31/1972 Don't know if i wrote above about holding hands while singing the version of the song written first above. Stumbled across a picture today. At the end of the song we were turning around while still holding hands forming a circle eacg facing outside and only then we were breaking with hands throwing them towards ground.

Thank you, Madonna, for the heads up!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bashi-bazouk

"A bashi-bazouk or bashibazouk (Turkish başıbozuk, or delibaş, literally "damaged head", meaning "free headed", "leaderless", "disorderly") was an irregular soldier of the Ottoman army. They were particularly noted for their lack of discipline."
